As Cape Cod wedding caterers, we’re always on the prowl for the next “big thing.” We consider perusing wedding blogs and Pinning swoon-worthy details a (very fun) part of our job. With continued uncertainty about how gatherings will play out in 2021, we took a look at what some of our favorite sources are saying will be red hot for weddings this year.
The prognosticators all agree that smaller guest lists will be the norm for the 2021 wedding season. Whether it’s due to concerns that limited gathering size will be mandated, or a wish for couples to really reconnect with their family and closest friends after months of hibernation, we don’t know. But we are certainly seeing this with the couples we’re working with this year.
Smaller guest lists seem to be propelling several of the expected trends for this year. The three sources we checked all mentioned some take on the old “quality over quantity” adage. Junebug Weddings suggests that a smaller guest list will let you devote more of your budget to aesthetics. Harper’s Bazaar says go for the upgrade when it comes to your food and wine choices. WeddingWire.com “predicts” (did they use a crystal ball?) bespoke lighting installations, oversized floral arrangements, and over-the-top wedding attire. Hello, couture wedding dress!
On the flip side of the fashion coin, Junebug Weddings says a laid-back vibe – flowing hair and flat shoes – is the way to go. Maybe pair that Reem Acra gown with bejeweled gladiators or, since it’s Cape Cod, flips flops?
Continued concerns about air and international travel also appear to be driving couples’ choices on where to wed. Junebug Weddings sees at-home weddings gaining in popularity and, for those who choose a destination wedding, it will be something fairly close to home. Harper’s says it will be all about the beach. Hello, Cape Cod destination wedding!
There are several wedding venues on Cape Cod that offer the ability to have an at-home wedding on the beach — a rental home, that is. The Cape has several sizeable rental homes that permit tented weddings on the lawn (outdoor weddings are another biggie for 2021). With multiple bedrooms, you can opt to gather with your family or wedding party for a long weekend, and then welcome all of your guests for the “Big Day.”
As far as the all-important look of your wedding, there appears to be no middle ground for 2021. We’re all in a bit of a “mood” after living through the last year, and the expected trends in aesthetics make sense for different reasons.
For couples who want to infuse the design of their wedding with visible cheer, both Harper’s and Junebug say pops of bold color will be big. For a Cape Cod wedding, we love the idea of navy – so classic – paired with the shades of orange, lime, and fuchsia one might expect to find in Lily Pulitzer’s closet.
For couples craving a much-needed dose of relaxation in their wedding décor, Harper’s calls for an “English garden vibe” and WeddingWire suggests nostalgic details. Think a monochromatic palette layered with lush textures: soothing, yet filled with visual interest.
Wedding trends are well and good, but the most important thing you and your beloved can do on your wedding day is relax and have fun. Oh, and don’t forget to say, “I do.”
